Recession

Glossary

A recession is a period of economic decline marked by a fall in GDP, rising unemployment, and reduced consumer spending. While the technical definition varies, a recession is often identified as two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth. Economists also look at indicators like declining industrial production, falling corporate earnings, and reduced consumer confidence. The stock market often reacts negatively to recessions, and central banks may lower interest rates to stimulate economic recovery.
