A year later, Apple, $AAPL, Vision Pro owners say they regret buying the $3,500 headset

Over a year has passed since Apple introduced its Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, and for many early buyers who spent $3,500, that purchase has become a source of disappointment.

According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, several early adopters of the Vision Pro now say they rarely use the device—and many regret buying it altogether.

“It’s just collecting dust. I think I’ve probably used it four times in the last year,” said Dustin Fox, a real estate agent based in Centreville, Virginia. “It’s way too heavy. I can’t wear it for more than 20 or 30 minutes without it hurting my neck.”

Fox said he was drawn in by the headset’s novelty and possible productivity features but found the 1.3 to 1.4-pound device uncomfortable for extended use. He considered selling it but noted he wouldn’t come close to recouping his initial investment.

Another buyer, Tovia Goldstein, shared a similar experience: “After 60 minutes, you can’t, you just have to throw it down. I wouldn’t recommend anyone buying it, unless you’re really rich and don’t know what to do with your money.” Goldstein also criticized the device’s lengthy startup process, which requires connecting to an external battery and waiting several minutes before use.

Some Vision Pro owners reported feeling awkward wearing it in public, with a few mentioning they got “dirty looks” from others. One person even cited that discomfort as a reason for selling the headset for $1,900—about 46% less than the original price.

“It’s definitely a glimpse at the future. I just think it’s still a long way off,” said Anthony Racaniello, who runs a media studio. “Right now, it’s like strapping a 500-pound MacBook Pro to your face and having people laugh at you.”

When it launched in February 2024, Apple acknowledged that the Vision Pro wasn’t expected to be a mass-market product. Its steep price and limited everyday utility made it a tough sell—even to loyal Apple fans.

Despite that, the initial launch generated considerable buzz. It’s estimated that Apple sold between 160,000 and 180,000 units in pre-orders during a single January weekend. Social media quickly filled with videos of people wearing the Vision Pro in questionable scenarios—such as while driving or even at a wedding.

Apple is now reportedly working on two new headsets, including a lighter and more affordable successor to the Vision Pro, which could address some of the concerns raised by early adopters.
