After the popularity of AI art, more and more people are using it while questioning its legality of it. Now, the company behind an AI art service called Stable Diffusion, Stability AI, has received a lawsuit from Getty Images regarding using copyrighted images.
The lawsuit comes from Getty Images, a stock image giant, alleging that Stability AI committed copyright infringement. The suit notes that the tool used copyrighted images without obtaining any licensing.
Getty Images detailed their thoughts on AI and how it could potentially be trained to respect personal and intellectual property rights. The statement also noted that they already provide licenses that could be used to train artificial intelligence.
“Stability AI did not seek any such license from Getty Images and instead, we believe, chose to ignore viable licensing options and long standing legal protections in pursuit of their stand-alone commercial interests.”
Getty Images dropped a press release on the matter, saying Stability AI copied and processed millions of copyright-protected images without obtaining the license to do so. Aside from images, associated metadata was reportedly used without the needed license.
While Getty Images has taken a stance against using alleged copyright images by artificial intelligence, its competitor, Shutterstock, has announced plans to do the opposite. In October, Shutterstock announced plans to expand its OpenAI partnership to enhance its AI-generated content while funding and compensating artists.
OpenAI has taken the world by storm with Microsoft, an early investor, planning to invest $10 billion in the artificial intelligence company. Some people don't know that Elon Musk was not just an early investor but actually part of its board before he dropped the position in 2018, per Fortune.
After the widespread success of OpenAI in terms of how many users it gathered in just a few months, Microsoft revealed plans to integrate ChatGPT, one of its AI products, into the company's other products like its Bing search engine.
