Axel Springer, owner of Insider, tells journalists that AI could replace them

Per CNN

Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner shared his thoughts on artificial intelligence, saying artificial intelligence has the potential to affect journalism. Specifically, he noted that AI could potentially replace independent journalism.

Döpfner: "Artificial Intelligence has the potential to make independent journalism better than it ever was — or simply replace it."

Axel Springer is one of Europe's largest media groups and owns Insider, Politico, and Blid, a popular German tabloid. The company's CEO recently released a memo giving the warning to journalists.

The memo was shared with CNN, which reported that AI could aggregate more information than humans. He then noted that because of this, journalists would have to focus on other approaches.

Here are what he suggests journalists do.

  • Focus more on news commentary.
  • Put more effort into exclusive news.
  • Highlight investigation.

He mentioned that these three things are something that machines aren't capable of doing. He noted that these types of content are still irreplaceable and that they will become even more successful for publishers.

Döpfner: "In short, the creation of exclusive and attractive content remains irreplaceable and is going to become even more critical to success for publishers... Only those who create the best original content will survive."

Axel Springer's executives noted that there would be significant job cuts in some specific business fields. These fields include administration, layout, production, and proofreading.

Nowadays, 68% of workers that use ChatGPT said that they have not yet told their bosses that they use artificial intelligence at work. Out of 4,500 professionals, it was found that only 27% of them used AI at work.

Now, other companies are starting to focus their efforts more on AI. An example of this is Meta, wherein Mark Zuckerberg started mentioning AI more compared to the metaverse, the technology that the company had been a strong advocate on.
