A newly surfaced video claims to showcase a massive electric vehicle mega factory under construction in China. The drone footage, purportedly filmed in Zhengzhou, highlights the BYD factory, a sprawling complex that is set to be larger than a major U.S. city and even features its own football stadium. Once fully completed, the factory will cover 50 square miles—making it bigger than San Francisco.
A Glimpse Inside the Mega Factory
The aerial footage reveals the sheer scale and ambition of the BYD facility. The complex features:
- State-of-the-art production buildings
- High-rise residential blocks
- A football pitch and tennis courts
- A vast road network connecting different sections
As the drone footage continues, it captures huge expanses of land designated for future expansion, with construction already in progress. Additionally, a worker accommodation village is visible within the site.

Surpassing Tesla's Gigafactory
According to a report by The Sun, the BYD factory in Zhengzhou is poised to overtake Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada, which spans 4.5 square miles. The site's ongoing expansion—from phases five to eight—is expected to significantly increase its footprint.
BYD, which currently employs over 900,000 people worldwide, is preparing to hire an additional 200,000 workers within the next three months. The Zhengzhou facility alone houses around 60,000 employees, with thousands living on-site. The inclusion of sports and recreational amenities makes the factory feel like a self-contained city.
China’s EV Ambitions & BYD’s Growth
Once operational, the BYD mega factory is projected to produce over one million vehicles annually. The first model to roll off the production line in April last year was the Song Pro DM-i, priced at approximately £17,600.
China is rapidly advancing its position as a global leader in electric vehicle production, with companies like BYD heavily investing in new factories and cutting-edge technology. This aggressive push underscores China’s ambitions to dominate the EV market and challenge competitors like Tesla.
