ChatGPT traffic has decreased again for third month in a row

ChatGPT traffic has decreased again for third month in a row, per Reuters.

In August, OpenAI's ChatGPT, the highly popular AI chatbot launched in November, saw its monthly website visits decline for the third consecutive month, although there are indications that this decline may be stabilizing, as reported by analytics firm Similarweb.

Globally, both desktop and mobile visits to the ChatGPT website decreased by 3.2%, totaling 1.43 billion visits in August. This followed approximately 10% drops in each of the preceding two months. Furthermore, the average time spent by visitors on the website has been gradually decreasing since March, dropping from an average of 8.7 minutes in March to 7 minutes in August.

However, August did witness a slight increase in the number of unique worldwide visitors, rising to 180.5 million users from 180 million.

With schools resuming classes in September, there is potential for ChatGPT's traffic and usage to rebound, and some educational institutions have begun incorporating it into their curricula. Notably, U.S. ChatGPT traffic experienced a slight uptick in August, coinciding with the return of American schools to session.

David F. Carr of Similarweb, who closely monitors ChatGPT and its competitors, suggested that students seeking assistance with homework assignments may be a contributing factor, as the percentage of younger users on the website declined over the summer and is now starting to recover.
