A sizable group of House conservatives — many from the House Freedom Caucus — headed to the White House late this morning. Among them were Reps. Chip Roy, Ralph Norman, and Tim Burchett, all of whom have been key holdouts on the sweeping legislative package.
Norman, who joined Roy in voting against moving the rule forward in the House Rules Committee, told CNN he wasn’t sure if they’d meet directly with former President Trump, but conceded, “he controls the shots.”
A White House official told CNN earlier that the president was expected to sit down with at least some of the members.
Burchett, who ended up supporting the House version of the bill despite earlier misgivings about spending levels, said he’s still “undecided” on whether he’ll back the Senate-passed version.
“I don’t care if it’s July 40th, honestly,” Burchett said, criticizing the July 4 deadline set by Trump. “It just pushes us into a corner, and now we’re all panicking.”
House Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris, who voted “present” when the bill passed the House in May, told CNN, “I’m still voting no on the rule. We need to get this right.”
Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who’s been a consistent no due to deficit concerns — and has taken heat from Trump over it — said he’s not budging.
When asked if anything could change his mind, Massie replied, “We could go back to the drawing board with a skinny bill.”
As for the looming holiday deadline, he said, “It’s arbitrary. There’s no reason to bankrupt the country just because you want to go shoot off some fireworks.”
