Per The Hollywood Reporter
Disney's Avatar: The Way of Water is on its way to breaking new barriers as it gets closer to the lifetime gross numbers of Titanic. So far, the movie has already made $2.04 billion, closing in on the Titanic's $2.19 billion.
So far, Avatar: The Way of Water has gained $1.426 billion overseas and $598 million domestically. In China alone, the movie was able to rake in a whopping $230 million.
With the rate that the movie is doing, it is getting closer to beating the first Avatar movie, which launched 13 years ago in 2009. The first Avatar movie raked in a whopping $2.9 billion, with Avatar: The Way of Water already over two-thirds of the way to beating it.
Disney's new 2023 movie recently surpassed Spider-Man: No Way Home as the sixth highest-grossing film of all time. The movie is now getting closer and closer to Avengers: Infinity War's numbers at $2.05 billion.
After surpassing the Marvel blockbuster, the movie will have to outperform the next movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, at a whopping $2.07 billion. Previously, director James Cameron said that the movie would need to reach the $2 billion mark for it to be considered a success due to its massive costs.
Toward the end of 2022, Disney's Avatar: The Way of Water reached another milestone as it was considered the highest-grossing film of that year. During that time, the film just made its way to the top 10-grossing films of all time, and now, it is higher at number 6 on the list as seen on Box Office Mojo.
The Avatar sequel cost Disney and the 20th Century, before marketing costs, over $400 million to produce, which was previously seen as a huge risk by the studio. The movie has already reached its target mark and is constantly moving up.
