Aside from Twitter, Musk has many other companies that have come with recent developments. These include the delivery of Tesla's Semi trucks to PepsiCo, Neuralink's event announcing its plan to start human trials in six months, and now, SpaceX getting the go signal from the Federal Communications Commission for 7,500 next-gen Starlink satellites to be deployed into space.
The authorization of the FCC would allow Musk to further his push on Starlink, under SpaceX, to provide satellite internet connection to parts of the world that are hard to access. The go signal would allow them to launch 7,500 Gen 2 Starlink satellites.
Compared to the Gen 1, with over 3,500 satellites already in orbit, the second-gen satellites are around five times bigger than the current satellites. The current-gen satellites weigh 573 pounds, while the second-gen satellites weigh a whopping 2,755 pounds per Everyday Astronaut.
Despite the positive news, this falls short of SpaceX's full application, including deploying about 29,988 satellites to low Earth orbit. On top of this, the authorization came with conditions around the company's plan for deployment.
SpaceX must coordinate with NASA and the National Science Foundation as part of the conditions. In 2018, SpaceX got approval from the FCC for 4,425 of its first-gen Starlink satellites, per Reuters.
Despite only having 3,500 satellites in orbit, SpaceX's Starlink has already amassed thousands of paying customers in the United States. The company failed eligibility for $885.5 million in rural broadband subsidies which led to the company challenging the FCC's decision.
Starlink didn't pass the subsidies because data showed it declined in speed over the past year, with prices too high for regular customers. SpaceX's Starlink charges customers $599 for a user terminal on top of the $110 monthly fee for the service.
Starlink also charges residential users $0.25 and $1 for business customers per additional gigabyte. The service was able to amass around 500,000 subscribers in June 2022.
