The class of 2025 is aiming high, expecting to earn an average annual salary of $101,500, according to a recent ZipRecruiter report. That figure significantly overshoots reality, given that the actual average starting salary for recent college grads comes in at $68,400 before taxes.
While these expectations may seem overly ambitious, breaking the six-figure threshold right out of college isn’t out of reach. Two major paths can lead there: roles in corporate strategy—like consulting and program management—and in high-demand, less automatable fields such as nursing and home health care.
Notably, many of these positions don’t require an advanced or specialized degree, making them accessible even for new grads.
Based on ZipRecruiter platform data, here are the top 10 entry-level jobs offering six-figure starting pay:
- Consulting
- Program Management
- Nursing
- Industrial Maintenance
- Telecommunications
- Business Development
- Data Specialist
- Home Health Care
- Real Estate Sales
- Procurement
Gen Z's Ambitions: Healthcare and Consulting Take the Lead
While Gen Z grads are brimming with optimism—perhaps to the point of overlooking the $33,000 gap between their salary hopes and reality—they may need to recalibrate their expectations. Many new grads have less leverage in salary negotiations than they anticipate.
ZipRecruiter’s survey shows that nearly half of soon-to-be grads plan to negotiate higher offers to sustain their ideal lifestyle. However, only 31% of recent grads successfully negotiated an increase. Meanwhile, 30% earned less than they had hoped, and 11% fell well below their salary expectations. Over 40% reported having to scale back their living standards after entering the job market.
Still, opportunity remains. For many in the class of 2025, the best way to reach that $100K goal might not be waiting for a raise—it could be switching jobs altogether. About 83% of Gen Z professionals describe themselves as "job-hoppers," and three out of four change roles before ever getting a promotion. Careers in nursing or consulting may be their ticket to the top income tier.
