Google has entered into a partnership with nuclear energy developer Elementl Power to advance three new nuclear power sites in the United States, each projected to generate at least 600 megawatts of electricity. This initiative aims to address the escalating energy demands of data centers, particularly those supporting artificial intelligence applications.
In this collaboration, Google will provide early-stage development funding for the projects, covering aspects such as site permitting and securing interconnection rights. While specific financial details remain undisclosed, Google retains the option to purchase power from these sites upon their completion.
Elementl Power, established in 2022, has yet to construct a nuclear facility. The company describes itself as "technology agnostic," indicating that it will select the most advanced reactor technology available when ready to commence construction. Their objective is to contribute 10 gigawatts of nuclear power to the U.S. grid by 2035.
This partnership reflects a broader trend among tech giants investing in nuclear energy to support their operations. For instance, Google previously announced a deal with Kairos Power to purchase energy from small modular reactors, aiming to add 500 megawatts of carbon-free power to the grid by 2035.
As the demand for reliable, carbon-free energy sources grows, collaborations like these are becoming increasingly vital to meet the energy needs of the technology sector.
