India is seeing increasing prices for tomatos, with some places like a vegetable market in Kolkata selling them for 108.92 rupees on July 11 from its original 26.76 rupees during the start of the year. This was a reported 366.86% markup from its original price.
The increase in prices was mainly due to flooding in some states that were known tomato producers. According to India's National Institute of Biotic Stresses Management, these places included Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.
“Due to excess rainfall in these states, tomato [crops have] been highly affected… A large part of the tomato crop has been destroyed due to rains and flood,”
McDonald's India, both its West and South franchise, gave a statement regarding the situation as they decided to still include tomatoes within their menu.
“This is a seasonal problem that the restaurant and food industry has to face every monsoon,”
Toward the end of May, it was reported that the price of the ingredients needed for an English breakfast reached a record high of $44 for the complete meal.
At the start of the year, it was reported that egg smuggling was up by 108% at the US-Mexico border for the last three months of 2022. This came as the prices of eggs skyrocketing, which led to more smuggling attempts.
