OpenAI co-founder says they 'made a mistake' after Elon Musk criticized them for ChatGPT being 'woke'

Per Business Insider

Elon Musk recently critcized OpenAO's ChatGPT, calling it too "woke." In an interview with The Information, OpenAI's cofounder said that they "made a mistake."

OpenAI cofounder and president Greg Brockman replied to Musk's criticisms. Musk was actually an OpenAI cofounder but had to give up his position due to its conflict of interest with Tesla since the latter also focused on artificial intelligence.

Brockman's statement to The Informer shared that the implemented systems couldn't capture the values they wanted to be there. He then acknowledged Musk's criticisms, saying they were legitimate.

Brockman: "We made a mistake: The system we implemented did not reflect the values we intended to be in there... And I think we were not fast enough to address that. And so I think that's a legitimate criticism of us."

Screenshots were recently shared on Twitter showing ChatGPT declining to create a positive poem about Donald Trump and giving the defense that it wasn't programmed to create content that was "partisan, biased or political." However, when asked to do the same about Joe Biden, chatbot carried out the poem.

Musk replied to the thread, saying it was "a serious concern." Brockman explained in the interview that ChatGPT was still a work in progress and that they didn't want their AI to be biased.

Brockman: "We want the default personality of OpenAI to be one that treats all sides equally. Exactly what that means is hard to operationalize, and I think we're not quite there."

It was recently found that more than half of Americans thought that AI poses a risk to humanity. Only a tenth of participants in a recent survey said that they think AI will have a positive effect on society.

Musk has recently approached AI researchers about building a new research lab to develop a ChatGPT alternative.
