Following the recent launch of Perplexity’s Comet, OpenAI is reportedly preparing to unveil its own AI-driven web browser to rival Google Chrome, according to a Reuters report published Wednesday.
The browser, expected to debut in the coming weeks, is designed to rethink the way people navigate the internet using AI—similar to Perplexity’s Comet and The Browser Company’s Dia. Rather than directing users away from ChatGPT, the browser is said to keep some interactions within the ChatGPT interface itself. Reuters also notes that OpenAI may incorporate its AI browsing assistant, Operator, as a central feature of the new product.
OpenAI has reportedly been considering a browser project since 2024, as previously reported by The Information. Like Perplexity, the company appears interested in bypassing traditional search intermediaries such as Google to gain more direct control over user data and to craft new, AI-centered browsing experiences.
