Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed deep concern on Friday about the growing potential for global conflict, warning that the world may be edging closer to a large-scale war. When asked directly whether he feared the outbreak of a third world war, Putin admitted he was indeed worried, underscoring the seriousness of the global situation.
Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the Russian leader described the international climate as increasingly volatile, pointing to several flashpoints around the world that could escalate further. He specifically cited Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, and mounting security concerns surrounding nuclear facilities in the Middle East—particularly in Iran, where Russian engineers are currently constructing two nuclear reactors.
“There is a growing potential for conflict, and unfortunately, it’s not diminishing,” Putin said. “These developments are taking place right before our eyes. They directly affect us and demand our undivided attention. I say this with complete sincerity—without irony, without any exaggeration. It is genuinely disturbing.”
Putin stressed that the risks are not hypothetical or far-off, but immediate and close to home. He emphasized the need for vigilance and diplomacy, and suggested that global leaders should take more seriously the chain reactions that regional conflicts can trigger, especially when nuclear interests are involved.
“Global stability is under pressure,” he warned, “and the mechanisms that once helped prevent the escalation of crises seem to be weakening or ignored altogether.”
His remarks come at a time when Russia continues to face international condemnation for its invasion of Ukraine, while simultaneously maintaining complex alliances in the Middle East. Putin’s reference to Iran’s nuclear program and the involvement of Russian specialists highlighted his broader concern that regional tensions could spiral into something far more dangerous, with global consequences.
As geopolitical rivalries deepen and the threat of miscalculation grows, Putin’s tone reflected a rare moment of overt anxiety about the direction the world is heading.
