Russia says Israel's attacks on Iran are illegal

Russia warned Tuesday that Israel’s strikes on nuclear facilities in Iran are pushing the world toward the brink of a nuclear disaster.

In a statement addressing the rapidly intensifying conflict between Iran and Israel, the Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the ongoing Israeli attacks as illegal under international law. Moscow said the strikes pose grave risks to global security and could ignite a nuclear catastrophe with worldwide consequences — including for Israel itself.

Russia called on Israeli leaders to “come to their senses” and immediately halt attacks on nuclear sites, particularly those under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards and subject to inspections. Moscow also urged the UN nuclear watchdog to prepare a detailed written report for both the IAEA Investigative Committee and the UN Security Council, assessing the impact of the Israeli strikes on the safety of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

Citing the widespread backlash from the international community, Russia said that Israel’s actions are “understood and supported only by those states that are its direct accomplices, acting out of opportunism.” The ministry emphasized that Iran, for its part, has reaffirmed its commitment to its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and expressed willingness to reopen dialogue with the United States aimed at finding diplomatic solutions — provided Israel ends its attacks.

Russia reiterated that lasting resolution can only be reached through negotiation and diplomacy, not force. It stressed that the global goal of nuclear non-proliferation, anchored in the NPT, must not come at the cost of civilian lives or through military aggression.

Tensions in the region have surged since Friday, when Israel launched airstrikes on several Iranian targets, including military and nuclear sites. Iran responded with retaliatory strikes, escalating fears of a broader conflict.
