Sean “Diddy” Combs was found guilty Wednesday of prostitution-related offenses but acquitted of the more serious sex trafficking and racketeering charges that could have landed the hip-hop mogul in prison for life.
The verdict, delivered after three days of jury deliberation, was a mixed outcome that still carries the potential for a sentence of up to 10 years. It also marks a likely end to Combs’ multifaceted career as a chart-topping music executive, fashion entrepreneur, brand ambassador, and reality TV personality.
After the verdict was read, Combs raised his hands in a prayer gesture toward the jury and embraced his attorney, Teny Geragos. His family and supporters, seated in the courtroom gallery, reacted with restrained joy—despite the judge’s warning against outbursts. When the first “not guilty” was announced, one person couldn’t help but exclaim, “Yeah!”
Combs appeared visibly relieved, subtly pumping his fist as he absorbed the news that he had been cleared of the most serious allegations.
The jury convicted Combs, 55, of violating the federal Mann Act by transporting individuals—including girlfriends and paid male sex workers—across state lines for sexual activity, a felony offense. However, he was acquitted on charges of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, which were tied to explosive accusations that he orchestrated coercive, drug-fueled sex marathons by leveraging his wealth, power, and physical dominance.
The defense contended that the women involved were consenting adults and argued that even the more aggressive elements of Combs’ behavior did not rise to the legal definition of trafficking or organized criminal conduct.
U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian is now deliberating whether to release Combs on bail pending sentencing. He adjourned the proceedings to consider the request.
Visibly emotional, Combs wiped his face and dropped to his knees at his seat, bowing his head in prayer. In the gallery, his family rose to their feet and applauded as he turned to face them.
“I’ll be home soon,” Combs called out. “I love you, baby.”
