Tinder, MTCH, is testing letting users set a 'height preference'

Tinder is embracing the dating app world’s reputation for surface-level preferences by introducing a new feature that allows paying users to specify height preferences on their profiles.

After a Reddit user shared a screenshot of the new height setting in the Tinder app, the company confirmed to TechCrunch that the feature is being rolled out as part of a global test.

The feature is currently available only to Tinder Gold and Premium subscribers included in the test group, not to users on the free tier. Importantly, the setting is designed to reflect a preference rather than serve as a strict filter—meaning it won’t automatically block or exclude profiles that don’t meet the specified height but will instead influence which profiles are recommended.

“We’re always listening to what matters most to our Tinder users — and testing the paid height preference is a great example of how we’re building with urgency, clarity, and focus,” said Phil Price Fry, Tinder’s VP of Communications, in an emailed statement. “This is part of a broader effort to help people connect more intentionally on Tinder. Our new product principles guide every decision, and this one speaks directly to a few: prioritizing user outcomes, moving fast, and learning quickly. Not every test becomes a permanent feature, but every test helps us learn how we can deliver smarter, more relevant experiences and push the category forward.”

While dating apps traditionally let users filter by factors like age, relationship goals, or desire for children, the addition of height preferences is more likely to spark debate.

Ever since online dating took off, physical attributes — particularly appearance and body size — have become central in shaping who gets matched. Tinder, in particular, played a major role in accelerating this shift with its photo-driven swipe interface, where users often make split-second decisions based solely on images.

This culture has also amplified certain physical biases, especially around height. It’s now common to see profiles where women state they’re only interested in men who are at least 6 feet tall — a preference that, while frequently expressed online, may not hold as strongly in real-life dating scenarios.
