Trump calls for an end to Daylight Savings Time

President Donald Trump on Friday renewed his push to end the practice of changing clocks for daylight saving time, just a month after he remarked that public opinion on the issue was too evenly split to take action.

“The House and Senate should push hard for more Daylight at the end of a day. Very popular and, most importantly, no more changing of the clocks, a big inconvenience and, for our government, A VERY COSTLY EVENT!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Although lawmakers have repeatedly introduced legislation to make daylight saving time permanent, such efforts have consistently stalled in Congress.

Supporters of a permanent switch argue that eliminating the fall clock change would allow for more evening daylight, giving people more time to enjoy outdoor activities. The idea has gained particular traction among golfers and those in the golf industry.

Opponents, however, caution that making daylight saving time permanent would result in darker mornings for much of the year—forcing children to head to school or wait for buses in the dark.

“It’s a 50/50 issue, and if something is a 50/50 issue, it’s hard to get excited about it,” Trump told reporters last month. “It’s very even. And usually I find when that’s the case, what else do we have to do?”

Most of the U.S. has observed daylight saving time since the 1960s, though it was originally introduced by President Woodrow Wilson in 1918.
