Trump has reportedly indicated to top advisers that Elon Musk could be taking a step back from his current role in the administration

President Donald Trump has told senior advisers that Elon Musk may soon step back from his current role in the administration, according to sources familiar with the matter who spoke to ABC News.

Musk serves as a “special government employee,” a designation that limits his appointment to no more than 130 days. His term is expected to expire around the end of May, though there has been speculation that the White House might try to extend his status or find another way to keep him on.

As previously reported by ABC News, Musk’s role in the administration has created tension among Trump’s inner circle, with some aides divided over his influence and approach. His decision-making has, at times, sparked internal rifts.

However, sources say Musk’s supporters within the White House argue that reports suggesting he is being pushed out are exaggerated.

Trump is said to remain satisfied with Musk’s leadership at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), particularly with the aggressive cost-cutting efforts that have drawn both praise and criticism — including legal challenges.

Politico was the first to report that Trump had told close advisers that Musk would likely reduce his involvement in the coming weeks.

Earlier this week, Trump publicly addressed Musk’s status, noting the 130-day limit and saying that Musk will probably return to Tesla soon.

“Well, I think he’s … amazing,” Trump said.
“But I also think he’s got a big company to run. And so, at some point, he’s going to be going back. He wants to.”

ABC News had previously reported that some administration officials frustrated with Musk had accepted that he was unlikely to be constrained, and instead chose to manage the situation until his government term expires in May.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed the Politico report on X Wednesday, calling it “garbage.”

“Elon Musk and President Trump have both publicly stated that Elon will depart from public service as a special government employee when his incredible work at DOGE is complete,” Leavitt wrote.
