President Donald Trump confirmed that tariffs on Canada and Mexico are set to take effect next month as planned, following an initial delay intended to give both countries time to address his concerns over border security.
“The tariffs are going forward on time, on schedule,” Trump said Monday during a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House.
When asked about the tariffs—originally postponed until March 4—Trump made it clear they would proceed. Canada and Mexico have introduced new border policies in an effort to avoid the penalties, which Trump argues are necessary to curb the flow of undocumented migrants and illicit drugs like fentanyl.
Trump also reiterated his commitment to implementing so-called reciprocal tariffs, a plan that would align U.S. duties on foreign goods with the tariffs and trade barriers those countries impose on American products.
“It’ll be very good for our country,” Trump said. “Our country will be extremely liquid and rich again.”
