Donald Trump's family business unveiled a new U.S. mobile service and a $499 smartphone on Monday, branding the venture as Trump Mobile. The initiative, announced at Trump Tower in Manhattan, marks the latest in a series of deals brokered by the president’s children aimed at leveraging the Trump name while he is in office.
The service will operate using the infrastructure of the three major U.S. wireless networks. However, specific details — such as the identity of the family's business partner and the financial terms of the licensing agreement — were not immediately revealed.
“We are going to be introducing an entire package of products,” said Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, “where people can come and they can get telemedicine on their phones for one flat monthly fee, roadside assistance on their cars, unlimited texting to 100 countries around the world.”
Part of the launch included promotion of a "sleek, gold smartphone" said to be "designed and built in the United States." Yet it remains unclear which U.S.-based manufacturer could produce a phone at a $499 price point — a challenge that has proven difficult even for major global brands like Apple. The lack of a significant domestic smartphone manufacturing base is largely attributed to high labor costs, complex supply chains, and dependence on international parts suppliers.
While the president has stated that his business holdings were placed in a trust managed by his children to avoid conflicts of interest, income from these ventures still stands to benefit him personally, given his position at the helm of the Trump business empire.
In a financial disclosure released Friday, Trump reported over $600 million in income from various sources, including licensing agreements, cryptocurrency ventures, and golf properties — figures reflecting revenue through the end of 2024, prior to the start of his second term. Since then, the family’s crypto-related projects alone have generated hundreds of millions more.
"Anyone paying attention can see that President Trump views the presidency as a tool to expand his family's wealth," said Harvard Law professor Lawrence Lessig. "Maybe this latest example will help more people recognize that undeniable truth."
