Twitter encrypted DMs along the pipeline of Elon Musk's aims this month

Per Tech Crunch

Elon Musk has long discussed adding new features to Twitter, including a longer character count and another evident feature, the view count. Now, the CEO says that other features he aims to roll out this month include the ability to reply to individual DMs with reaction emojis and through encryption.

Musk: "Aiming to roll out ability to reply to individual DMs, use any reaction emoji & encryption later this month"

This was not the first time Musk shared how he wanted to improve direct messages on Twitter. The CEO's main concern was improving its security and overall experience.

In November 2022, Musk shared that he wanted Twitter to become more like Signal, saying Twitter DMs' goal is to be able to superset one of the top encrypted messaging services today.

Later, in December, Musk said that he wanted DMs to become encrypted to make it impossible for Twitter employees to see the contents of users' messages. Musk then said that he would ideally want direct messages to become like iMessage or Signal.

Previously, Twitter staff had the power to tweet using any account with a program that was once known as "GodMode."

End-to-end encryption is a feature already offered by some competitors. Aside from Signal and iMessage, WhatsApp also offers encryption features. As of press time, Twitter employees can still read DM content.

Back in November, Jane Manchun Wong shared strips of code that suggested that Twitter would bring back end-to-end encryption for Android. Musk simply replied to this with a wink emoji.

Wong: "Twitter is bringing back end-to-end encrypted DMs... Seeing signs of the feature being worked on in Twitter for Android."

In early February, Twitter announced it would allow 4,000-character-long tweets for Blue subscribers. The feature lets users write longer tweets, which would still be displayed as a regular tweets but with an option for people to read more.
