Twitter is Working on 'Coins' Feature, A Potential Way to Support Creators

Per Engadget

Elon Musk has previously talked about adding a way for creators to monetize their content on Twitter. Spotted by two app researchers, a feature called "Coins" could be in the works.

Unlike Reddit, Twitter has not yet had a way to incentivize creators on the platform. This is something that Musk has previously been vocal about, saying he wants to add a way for creators to earn on the platform. The news comes at a time when YouTube will pay for Shorts with revenue coming from YouTube Premium.

The feature was spotted by two app researchers, Jane Manchun Wong and Nima Owji, who noted that the coins could be part of the tipping feature, which already exists on Twitter.

Jane Manchun Wong shared pictures on the social platform showing a "Coins" option on the menu. A different image was shared by Nima Owji, showing a closeup of the icon showing a gold coin with the Twitter bird.

Wong: "Twitter is working on Coins purchasing screen On the web, Twitter Coins purchase will be done through Stripe"

The image by Owji dates back to December, which can be found in the same section as Wong's image. So far, no information has been given by the company regarding its plans for the feature or when it plans to drop it.

Wong also spotted another feature that could work closely with Coins called "Awards," where users can use coins to buy gifts in the app for other accounts. The app researcher shared another image showing the Twitter Awards titles. This comes at a time when the company is planning on selling user names, just like domains.

Here is the list of Twitter Awards titles and how many coins they require:

  • 1 Coin - 1 Mind Blown
  • 5 Coins - 1 Bravo
  • 10 Coins - 1 Super Like
  • 20 Coins - 1 Helpful
  • 50 Coins - 1 Bullseye
  • 100 Coins - 1 Gem
  • 300 Coins - 1 Crown
  • 600 Coins - 1 Rose
  • 1000 Coins - 1 Hilarious
  • 2000 Coins - 1 Bronze
  • 3000 Coins - 1 Silver
  • 5000 Coins - 1 Gold
