ensions continue to rise in Los Angeles as protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement intensify, leading to violent clashes with law enforcement and the torching of vehicles in the downtown area.
In response, President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guardsmen to what the White House calls an effort to “address the lawlessness,” according to press secretary Karoline Leavitt. However, California Governor Gavin Newsom has condemned the move, urging the administration to withdraw the troops. He accused Trump of “trying to manufacture a crisis,” saying the president is “hoping for chaos so he can justify more crackdowns, more fear, more control.”

Trump Defends Deployment, Calls Newsom ‘Incompetent’
Speaking at a roundtable event, Trump defended his decision to send in federal forces, saying Governor Newsom should be grateful.
“He should only be happy I sent in the military,” Trump said. “Because if I didn’t send them, you would’ve had a problem the likes of which we haven’t seen in a long time.”
Trump suggested the situation had stabilized, thanks to the deployment: “It’s lucky for the people in Los Angeles and California that we did what we did. We got there just in time. It’s still simmering a little bit, but not very much.”
The stance marks a shift from Trump’s previous statements. Back in 2020 during an ABC News town hall, he said, “We can’t call in the National Guard unless we’re requested by a governor.” At the time, in response to widespread racial justice protests, he added, “I can call insurrection, but there’s no reason to ever do that.”
Pressed about what has changed since then, Trump pointed to leadership in California.
“The difference is we have an incompetent governor,” Trump said. “He’s destroying one of our great states. If I didn’t get involved—if we didn’t bring in the Guard—and we’ll bring more in if needed—then there would be no law and order. We have to make sure that’s preserved.”
