US Plans to Send M1 Abrams Tanks and Germany to Ship 62 Leopard 2s to Ukraine

Per The Globe And Mail

The US and Germany have agreed to extend their help to Ukraine by sending almost 100 tanks. The US will send M1 Abrams tanks, while Germany will send its Leopard 2s.

The US announced a plan that allowed it to purchase 31 M1 Abrams tanks, and Germany would ship out 62 Leopard 2s. Canada is still considering whether they will also contribute but should a decision be made; this will see an additional four to five Leopard 2 tanks.

The shipment of the German tanks will be the result of the efforts of other European countries. On top of the tanks above, Morocco and Britain also announced earlier that they would also be supplying tanks to Ukraine.

Morocco will send T-72B, and Britain will send 14 Challenger 2 tanks. US President Joe Biden gave a statement regarding how Ukraine is doing its best to defend its territory. On top of that, the US President specifically said that the country needs to be capable of fighting against Russia.

Biden: “To liberate their land, they need to be able to counter Russia’s evolving tactics and strategy on the battlefield in the very near term.”

The report noted that Germany remained reluctant about sending tanks to Ukraine unless the US did the same thing. This was done as the country feared that it could be the direct target of Russia for interfering with the war.

Other countries like Spain, Finland, and even the Netherlands have also noted that they would like to contribute to the efforts. They have previously expressed their interest in wanting to donate Leopards.

Previously, the Kremlin said that the US is "fighting an indirect war with Russia." Despite this, Biden continued supporting Ukraine by inviting President Zelensky to the US, even leading to him speaking for Congress.

The news comes shortly after multiple Ukraine officials have effectively resigned after allegations of corruption regarding financial impropriety.
