Walmart blocked ChatGPT with new guidelines barring employees from sharing customer info with the AI tool

Per Business Insider

Walmart Global Tech has decided to take a strong stance against using ChatGPT by employees. The company has decided to block the use of the AI bot with new guidelines saying employees shouldn't share any customer info with the tool.

An internal memo to employees shared how they could spot activity that reportedly posed a risk to Walmart. The memo was viewed by BI, which revealed new guidelines around using artificial intelligence tools.

Memo: "We've since taken the time to evaluate and develop a set of usage guidelines around generative AI tools and are now opening ChatGPT for usage within the Walmart network."

Erin Hulliberger, the spokesperson for Walmart, didn't give a response regarding when they blocked the use of generative AI. The memo revealed how most new technologies come with new benefits and risks.

Hulliberger: "Most new technologies present new benefits as well as new risks. It's not uncommon for us to assess these new technologies and provide our associates with usage guidelines."

The memo revealed how employees at Walmart needed to review the tool's outputs before they would rely on any provided information. The new guidelines also noted that employees were not allowed to cut and paste existing code for any reason.

Memo: "Putting Walmart information into these tools risks exposure of the company's information... Every associate is responsible for the appropriate use and protection of Walmart data."

Unlike Walmart, Amazon employees said that they were already using ChatGPT for software coding. As part of its initiative to adapt to the technology, the company told its employees not to share confidential information with the AI bot.

Regarding plagiarism concerns, OpenAI's ChatGPT has given multiple predictions regarding the stock market crash. One of its most recent predictions was the stock market crashing on March 15, 2023, after previously predicting a crash on Feb 15.
