WHO has officially lifted the "global emergency" label off COVID-19. The announcement was given by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General.
Ghebreyesus: "It is therefore with great hope that I declare COVID-19 over as a global health emergency,"
The report mentioned that there have been over 6.9 million global deaths from the virus. Although COVID-19 was declared no longer a "global emergency," Ghebreyesus clarified that although it was no longer a global health emergency, this didn't mean that it was no longer a global health threat.
The Director-General also commented on the effects of COVID-19 worldwide and that it was important to learn from what had happened.
Ghebreyesus: "COVID has changed the world, and it has changed us. And that's the way it should be. If we go back to how things were before COVID-19, we will have failed to learn our lessons, and failed our future generations,"
The WHO data shows that the rate of COVID-19 deaths has dropped significantly to just 3,500 in the week to April 24, 2023. This was a drastic drop from its high of 100,000 on January 2021.
In 2022, US President Joe Biden officially declared that the pandemic was over. This came as other big economies started dismantling their "state of emergency" measures for COVID-19.
In November of last year, Twitter became one of the first major social media to decide to enforce its COVID-19 misinformation policy no longer. It was reported that 11,000 accounts were suspended.
Earlier this year, it was also reported that Moderna was considering a price of $110 to $130 for COVID-19 vaccines. This would be a huge jump from its original vaccine prices of just $15 to $16 per dose.
Previously, Moderna had already given estimates that it would be raising prices between $65 to $100 a shot as its major competitor, Pfizer, was also contemplating doing the same.
