Americans trust AI more than a CPA to do their taxes

Survey: Nearly Half of Americans Would Trust AI Over Human Tax Professionals

A recent survey by accounting software company Invoice Home found that 43% of Americans would rather trust artificial intelligence for tax help than a real tax professional.

At the same time, many people lack confidence in their own tax skills—with only two in five Americans saying they feel comfortable filing their taxes.

IRS Says Filing Taxes Without AI is Easier Than You Think

As tax season ramps up, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued new guidance emphasizing that filing taxes doesn’t require AI—and in many cases, it’s simpler than people expect.

The first step? Determine if you even need to file a tax return. Even if it’s not required, the IRS recommends filing anyway—you could be eligible for a refund. The agency provides a step-by-step guide to make the process easier.

Why Are Americans Avoiding Tax Filing?

Despite IRS efforts to simplify the process, many Americans delay filing.

Invoice Home CEO Petr Marek believes that the growing digitization of tax filing—combined with the habit-forming nature of social media and endless scrolling—has led many people to procrastinate on tedious but essential tasks like filing taxes.

This year’s tax season began on January 27, and the IRS expects over 140 million returns before the April 15 federal deadline. That leaves Americans about two and a half months to get their taxes in order.

Staying Safe: IRS Warns Against Scams

The IRS urges taxpayers to stay cautious and warns against fraudulent tax schemes. While AI and DIY tax software are gaining popularity, working with a trusted tax professional remains a safer choice.

For those who want to file taxes electronically, the IRS Free File tool allows most Americans to file for free via IRS.gov.

To avoid scams, the IRS advises choosing a tax professional carefully. A good starting point is selecting someone affiliated with a recognized national tax association.
