$DIS, Disney, is closing its Star Wars Themed Hotel.

Disney has made the surprising decision to permanently close its Galactic Starcruiser hotel, just 15 months after its initial grand opening. The immersive hotel experience, set in the Star Wars universe, allowed guests to embark on a three-day, two-night voyage aboard the luxurious starcruiser named The Halcyon. However, Disney recently announced that the hotel's final voyage will take place in September.

In a statement shared Disney expressed pride in the creative achievement of the Galactic Starcruiser, which was highly acclaimed by guests and known for its innovative and immersive entertainment. The statement further mentioned that the hotel served as a boutique, premium experience with only 100 rooms, providing Disney with the opportunity to explore new concepts on a smaller scale. Moving forward, Disney intends to utilize the knowledge gained from the Galactic Starcruiser to create future experiences that can reach a broader audience of guests and fans.

Disney will be reaching out to guests who had reservations for stays after September 30 to help them modify their bookings. Meanwhile, new bookings are temporarily on hold until May 26.

While the Galactic Starcruiser received exceptional guest satisfaction ratings, its high price point, reportedly around $1,200 per person per day, may have deterred some potential visitors. Family packages could amount to nearly $6,000. Nonetheless, the hotel offered an unprecedented level of interactivity, allowing guests to engage with original characters from the Star Wars universe. Whether aiding the Rebellion operatives or First Order officers, guests could savor culinary delights from various corners of the galaxy and even encounter familiar faces from the beloved franchise. Attire inspired by Star Wars was encouraged, although not mandatory.

Unlike Disney's other onsite lodging options, the Galactic Starcruiser was designed as a complete experiential stay, meaning guests couldn't freely visit the theme parks at will. However, there was an "excursion" to Batuu, also known as Disney Studios' Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge land. Additionally, dining options were predetermined, and the absence of standard Disney resort amenities, such as a pool or extensive outdoor spaces, was compensated by unique activities like lightsaber training and bridge operations lessons.

Imagineers shared that they had dedicated six or more years to developing the Galactic Starcruiser during a panel discussion prior to its opening.

Despite its closure, the Galactic Starcruiser made a significant impact as a distinct hospitality experiment and set a new benchmark for innovative and immersive entertainment within the Disney realm.
