Walt Disney Co's Avatar: The Way of Water has surpassed the previous highest-grossing film during the pandemic, Spider-Man: No Way Home. This comes at a time when films are struggling to get record numbers during the post-pandemic era.
While theaters are now open after a long time being closed during the pandemic, only a few movies have breached wide success raking in over a billion in box office revenue. Spider-Man: No Way Home was among the few who came out victorious and even set the record for highest grossing during the pandemic.
During the pandemic, streaming services started to take off but moving towards late 2022, Netflix subscribers decided to drop their subscriptions as an October survey showed that 25% of subscribers planned to leave the service following the company's plans to raise prices and add ad tiers.
Avatar: The Way of Water, directed by James Cameron, has surpassed the Spider-Man film's $1.93 billion gross. Sony Group-s Spider-Man generated a close $1.92 billion, as seen on Box Office Mojo.
The new box office contender has made its way to the top six highest-grossing films of all time. This was while surpassing other strong contenders like The Avengers, which grossed $1.5 billion; The Lion King, which grossed $1.66 billion; and Jurassic World, which grossed $1.67 billion.
With its box office numbers, Avatar: The Way of Water is on track to overtake Avengers: Infinity War, which has a lifetime gross of $2 billion and was released in 2018.
Avatar: The Way of Water is the second installment in James Cameron's Avatar movie series, with the first film retaining the title of highest-grossing overall at $2.92 billion.
The news that Avatar: The Way of Water surpassed Spider-Man: No Way Home just 12 days after the movie was announced as the highest-grossing film of 2022.
