Elon Musk is mounting a fierce campaign against President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax and policy bill, urging his more than 220 million followers on social media to pressure lawmakers and “KILL the BILL.”

Musk, who officially stepped down from his role in the Trump administration on May 30, has been vocally criticizing the Republican president’s hallmark legislation. The bill would extend the 2017 income tax cuts and introduce new tax breaks on tipped wages and overtime — key promises from Trump’s successful 2024 re-election campaign.

Musk’s opposition centers on the bill’s cost. According to the latest nonpartisan analysis, the legislation — already passed by the House — is projected to add roughly $2.4 trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade if enacted.

Framing the bill as fiscally reckless, Musk argued it undermines the work he led in the Department of Government Efficiency, a cost-cutting initiative. On June 3, he called the legislation a “disgusting abomination” and suggested that nearly all House Republicans who voted for it — all but two — should face primary challengers.

House Speaker Mike Johnson pushed back forcefully. “I think he’s flat wrong. I think he’s way off on this, and I’ve told him that — both publicly and privately,” Johnson said on June 4 in response to Musk’s remarks.

The dispute marks a growing rift between Trump and his former advisor — one that could jeopardize the bill’s path forward. Several Senate Republicans, including Ron Johnson (R-WI), Rick Scott (R-FL), and Rand Paul (R-KY), have also voiced concerns over the bill’s ballooning costs.
