Hong Kong suspends postal service for good bound for US

Hongkong Post has announced the suspension of its goods mail services to the United States in response to recent U.S. tariff increases. Effective immediately, sea mail services have been halted, and air mail services for items containing goods will cease on April 27. This decision follows the U.S. government's elimination of the "de minimis" exemption, which previously allowed tax-free entry for goods valued under $800, and the imposition of a 120% tariff on such items starting May 2.

In a statement, Hongkong Post criticized the U.S. measures as "unreasonable" and "bullying," asserting that it will not act as a collection agent for U.S. tariffs. The suspension applies to all postal items containing goods, while mail containing only documents will remain unaffected .

This development occurs amid escalating trade tensions between the U.S. and China. Since the U.S. revoked Hong Kong's special trading status in 2020, the city has been subjected to the same tariffs as mainland China.

The suspension of postal services is expected to impact trade between Hong Kong and the U.S., which was valued at approximately $34 billion in 2024.
