OpenAI is in the early stages of developing its own social media platform similar to X, according to multiple sources familiar with the project.
An internal prototype reportedly centers around a social feed focused on image generation within ChatGPT. CEO Sam Altman has been privately seeking feedback from outside the company, the sources said. It remains unclear whether OpenAI intends to launch the social platform as a standalone app or integrate it into ChatGPT, which recently became the most downloaded app worldwide. OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.
Introducing a social network within or alongside ChatGPT could escalate the existing rivalry between Altman and Elon Musk. In February, after Musk made an unsolicited $97.4 billion offer to buy OpenAI, Altman replied, “no thank you but we will buy twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.”
Moving into social media would also position OpenAI more directly against Meta, which is reportedly planning a social feed for a forthcoming AI assistant app. When news first emerged about Meta developing a ChatGPT competitor, Altman responded on X, saying, “ok fine maybe we’ll do a social app.”
A social platform could give OpenAI access to real-time user data—something that platforms like X and Meta already use to help train their AI models. Musk’s Grok, for example, pulls from X to generate content and has recently been merged with xAI. Meta, meanwhile, uses data from its user base to train its Llama models.
One reported idea behind OpenAI’s social media prototype is to use AI to help users share more engaging content. A source at another major AI lab commented, “The Grok integration with X has made everyone jealous—especially seeing how it helps create viral posts by saying something outrageous.”
Though OpenAI has several projects underway and this social initiative is still in its early phase, the effort reflects the company’s broader ambitions as it explores new directions amid growing expectations for its future.
