PepsiCo is Set to Receive Tesla's First Semi Trucks for 2017 Order

Per Electrek

The long-awaited delivery day for Tesla's Semi truck is finally here. After initially announcing on Oct 7 that PepsiCo Inc would receive the much-delayed Semi-trucks on Dec 1, the date has finally arrived, and the Tesla Semi trucks are expected to be delivered.

Leading up to the delivery, Coca-Cola has been expressing its intent to compete by starting deliveries with its own fleet of electric trucks from Renault, a Volvo-owned brand. Coca-Cola will be using this fleet for last-mile deliveries to customers in Belgium.

In a promotional video on Twitter, Renault Trucks shared a video with the text "Some talk the talk. Some walk the walk." while tagging Elon Musk and Tesla with the wink emoji and the hashtag, "#RevolutionIsOn."

PepsiCo initially reserved 100 Tesla Semi trucks in 2017 as the beverage maker wanted to reduce fuel and emissions, per Reuters. While Coca-Cola received their Renault Trucks delivery ahead of PepsiCo, they were already in the works with Volvo for the trucks much earlier.

Volvo's press release on Nov 14, 2006, revealed that Coca-Cola initially ordered 300 Volvo trucks to Russia. The first mention of the Renault Trucks was on Aug 18, 2009, when the beverage company received the first nine trucks and announced they were using them for the first time.

When comparing the two, Coca-Cola's Renault Trucks lag behind Tesla's Semi trucks in terms of mileage. However, this is because they are also not in the same category due to the number of motors they use.

The Renault Trucks E-Tech D has a single motor and can go up to 347 miles, while its D Wide Electric uses two motors and can go up to 195 miles. Tesla's Semi truck, on the other hand, uses three independent motors and can go up to 500 miles.

Tesla plans to produce 100 semi-trucks this year before drastically increasing its production to 50,000 units annually in 2024, just two years ahead.
