OpenAI Closes $11 Billion of New Funding Round at a $1.25 Trillion Valuation, Per Bloomberg

The Round That Shrank

OpenAI has closed $11 billion of its new funding round at a $1.25 trillion valuation, according to Bloomberg.

The round's path tells the story. OpenAI started out seeking more than $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation, then scaled back to $20 billion at $1.25 trillion. With $11 billion now closed, the remaining $9 billion is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, per Bloomberg.

The Market Is Repricing Everyone

A scaled-back OpenAI round is the private-market mirror of everything public markets did this week. Investors pushed back on Anthropic's planned $1.5 trillion IPO valuation, with buyers suggesting it could land closer to $1 trillion. Apollo warned that companies are starting to treat AI spending as a margin cost. The Nasdaq posted its worst day since the 2020 lockdowns.

OpenAI still closed $11 billion at a $1.25 trillion mark, the largest private valuation in the sector. The haircut is relative, not absolute: the ask came down 11 percent on valuation and the round came down by a third, in a week when being able to close at all, at scale, separates the top of the AI market from everyone below it.

The open question is the remaining $9 billion. If it completes on the same terms in the coming weeks, the repricing reads as a one-step adjustment. If it slips or re-prices again, the private market is confirming the public market's verdict rather than resisting it.

Options and Market Impact

OpenAI is private, so the exposure trades through its partners and backers: Microsoft as its principal cloud and equity partner, Nvidia as the supplier its spending underwrites, and SoftBank, which trades over the counter as SFTBY, as its largest outside backer.

A confirmed $1.25 trillion private mark also sets the reference price for Anthropic's IPO negotiation. Every dollar of discipline in OpenAI's round is an argument Anthropic's buyers will use, and vice versa.

Bottom Line

Per Bloomberg, OpenAI has closed $11 billion at $1.25 trillion, down from an original ask above $30 billion at $1.4 trillion, with $9 billion still to come. The biggest name in AI just took the market's new price. Everyone else will be measured against it.
