Amazon plans to close eight cashier-less Go convenience stores: Seattle, New York City, and San Francisco locations affected

Per USA Today

Amazon has disclosed that it will be closing eight out of its over 20 cashier-less Go convenience stores. The company will close "two in Seattle, two in New York, and four in San Diego."

The affected stores will shut down on April 1, but they will operate normally before then. However, the Seattle stores have already closed down.

An Amazon spokesperson gave a statement in the email regarding how they are optimizing their decisions as they periodically look at their store portfolio. It was said that the company plans to maintain the operation of its over 20 Amazon Go stores.

Amazon spokesperson: "We remain committed to the Amazon Go format, operate more than 20 Amazon Go stores across the U.S., and will continue to learn which locations and features resonate most with customers as we keep evolving our Amazon Go stores."

The company noted that they are trying to identify what other roles they can fill in other Amazon positions. These include transferring employees from one Go store to another nearby location.

In 2018, Amazon opened its first Go store in Seattle, in the company's headquarters. The store allowed customers to skip checkout lines through its "Just Walk Out" technology, which was the same system it used for additional Go stores.

Initially reported by Geek Wire, Amazon recently let go of 18,000 corporate and tech employees, which was the company's largest job cut to date. Amid the layoffs, the company's HR staffers were looking for new jobs themselves.

Amazon HR staffers, despite still being employed in the company, were already looking for new jobs. In late January, some of them used the #OpenToWork tag on LinkedIn, saying they were looking for a new job.

In other news, Amazon employees were already trying to incorporate ChatGPT for software coding. The team that tested the AI tool said it did a "very good job" at answering AWS customer support questions.
