Apple supplier Foxconn offers workers $1,400, the equivalent of one to two months of work, to stop protesting and leave the "iPhone City." The company claimed a miscommunication on pay was due to a "technical error."
Violent protests broke out over withheld pay, and working conditions suffered due to the strict COVID lockdown.
The Apple manufacturing partner made the offer through a text message from the HR department. Foxconn requested workers to return to dormitories saying they would vow to honor pay agreements.
The company offered around $1,120 for workers to quit their position and another $280 after they board buses to depart the facility.
Upon the lockdown, Foxconn tried to recruit 100,000 people, with new hires promised around $420 if they completed 30 days on the job and would then be given another $320 bonus after 60 days. Protests broke out when they were told the bonus payments would be delayed until March 15 and the second in May 2023.
