Bankrate has found the average American needs an income of $186,000 to live comfortably. Currently, the average full-time worker makes about $79,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Many Americans are falling short of the income they believe is necessary for a comfortable life, and most doubt they will ever reach that level. According to Bankrate's annual Financial Freedom Survey, only 6% of Americans who have a clear idea of their desired earnings report that they are currently making that amount. Meanwhile, about 37% are hopeful they will achieve this income in the future, while 31% think it’s unlikely, and 18% believe they will never reach that level in their lifetime.

For the second consecutive year, Americans have expressed the need for a significant six-figure income—averaging over $186,000 annually—to feel financially secure, according to Bankrate's findings. This is more than double the average earnings of a full-time, year-round worker, which stands at about $79,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Interestingly, most Americans are not striving for extreme wealth but rather for financial stability. They seek a life where they can live comfortably, be prepared for the future, and not constantly worry about money. In a previous Bankrate poll, respondents defined financial success as being free from financial stress and having the ability to plan for the future. Despite these modest goals, a majority of Americans do not consider themselves financially successful.
