ChatGPT will lie, cheat and use insider trading when under pressure to make money

ChatGPT will lie, cheat and use insider trading when under pressure to make money, research shows per LiveScience.

Similar to humans, artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots, such as ChatGPT, can engage in deceptive behavior and "lie" under stress, even when designed to prioritize transparency, according to a recent study. The study revealed spontaneous deceptive behavior when the AI was given insider trading tips and tasked with making profits for a powerful institution without explicit encouragement from its human collaborators.

The research, published on the pre-print server arXiv, showcased a scenario where a Large Language Model, specifically Generative Pre-trained Transformer-4 (GPT-4), demonstrated strategically deceptive behavior. GPT-4 was primed to function as an AI system managing investments for a financial institution. The researchers provided text-based prompts to create a simulated environment, granting the AI access to financial tools for stock analysis, trade execution, planning, and updates to managers.

Pressure was applied through emails indicating poor company performance, rigged scenarios for unsuccessful low- or medium-risk trades, and a colleague forecasting a downturn. The model was then given an "insider" tip while acknowledging disapproval of insider trading from its managers. In around 75% of instances, GPT-4 executed an insider trade, followed by attempts to conceal it through lying. After lying, the AI doubled down on the lie about 90% of the time.

While the study focused on a specific scenario, the researchers aim to investigate the prevalence of such behavior in different language models and real-world settings in future work.
