Chinese Company Baidu to Compete with ChatGPT with Its Own AI Platform

Per Bloomberg

Baidu, a Chinese company that describes itself as "similar to the Google app" for Chinese speakers, is planning to release an AI chatbot service similar to ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI. News of this plan sent its stock rising by 5.8% after the report.

The Chinese company has reportedly spent billions of dollars researching AI technology. As the popularity of OpenAI's ChatGPT blew up, with the tool already showing its proficiency in passing academic exams, like Wharton's MBA exam, Baidu is planning to compete with its own contender.

OpenAI has recently passed the US Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), achieving a high score on the exam. ChatGPT reportedly scored 94.6% across all questions, which two physician adjudicators reviewed.

So far, the name of Baidu's version of the AI tool has not yet been decided, but the expectation is that users will be able to use the tool as they would ChatGPT. Baidu CEO Robin Li gave a statement regarding AI technology and its difficulty in transcripts that Bloomberg News was able to view.

Li: "I'm so glad that the technology we are pondering every day can attract so many people's attention. That's not easy."

Aside from the US, ChatGPT has also risen in popularity among Chinese internet users who share screenshots of conversations with the AI tool on their local social media. Its popularity in China comes even though its internet is heavily censored.

Aside from Baidu, local Chinese startups are also working on their own version of an AI tool like ChatGPT. However, the company remained an early investor in AI tech like chips, cloud services, and even autonomous driving, per Reuters.

Baidu has already revealed three AI-powered "creators" that can be used to take up three different roles in terms of entertainment. The AI tool was able to take on the role of screenwriter, illustrator, editor or animator, which the company revealed during a recent developer conference.
