Fed Chair Powell was escorted out of the room as protesters interrupted his speech at ECNY.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell briefly left a room in New York after climate activists disrupted the beginning of a speech he was scheduled to give on the U.S. economy. The protesters, believed to be associated with a group called Climate Defiance, were escorted out by security.
Climate Defiance's mission is centered on advocating for nonviolent, mass-scale disruptions to challenge the status quo and urge politicians to take action to halt fossil fuel extractions on federal lands and waters.
The demonstrators chanted "End fossil fuel finance" and held signs accusing the Federal Reserve of contributing to environmental destruction and financial waste.
These activists previously interrupted an event attended by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, urging him to halt fossil fuel infrastructure projects.
Powell returned to his speech a few minutes after being temporarily removed from the room at the Economic Club of New York. His speech primarily focused on topics such as inflation, monetary policy, and the broader U.S. economy, without addressing the protesters.
