Per Bloomberg
Germany was one of the countries that supported Ukraine by providing it with military weapons, including tanks. The country plans to replace previously sent equipment to Ukraine by purchasing additional ones worth €843 million.
The country plans to make a purchase from Rheinmetall AG and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH worth €843 million for tanks and howitzers. Specifically, Germany will purchase 18 battle tanks and 12 self-propelled howitzers.
Per documents that Bloomberg obtained, it was revealed that the budget was expected to be approved. The purchase involves not only tanks and howitzers but also spare parts.
It was also confirmed that the new purchase would be replacing the Leopard 2 tanks that were previously sent.
Here is the breakdown of the supposed purchase.
- Leopard 2 tanks worth €525.6 million
- PzH 2000 howitzers worth €190.7 million
- Leopard spare parts worth €126.6 million
It was noted that the delivery of the first tanks could take three years, expected to happen in 2026 at the least. So far, Berlin has already sent 18 Leopard tanks to Kyiv.
Germany had previously opened a budget worth €100 billion for military upgrades in a new fund that was made outside its normal budget.
In February, it was reported that Putin threatened that he would be sending more than just tanks after getting news of German tanks making their way to Ukraine. The US sent M1 Abrams tanks, while Germany sent 62 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
Germany has also agreed to send 100 tanks, and shortly after, Canada said that they were considering contributing around four to five tanks as well.
In October, Germany Chancellor Olaf Sholz said they were free from Russian gas. However, during that time, they said the EU's gas price cap could cause a backfire.
This came as the Chancellor also said that Putin was using energy and hunger as a weapon but has failed to break the unity of the West.
