Google $GOOGL $GOOG is funding the construction of 7 small nuclear power reactors in the US to help with energy needed for AI

Google is actively seeking energy sources that not only meet its substantial energy demands but also align with its goal of achieving net-zero emissions, CEO Sundar Pichai said.

The company has set a target to reach net-zero emissions across all operations by 2030.

“It was a very ambitious target, and we continue to work toward it with the same level of ambition,” Pichai stated in an interview with Nikkei Asia on Thursday. “However, the increased scale of AI investments has added to the complexity of the task.”

Pichai also mentioned that Google is exploring additional clean energy investments, including solar power and new technologies like small modular nuclear reactors. However, he did not provide details on when or where the company might begin sourcing electricity from nuclear power.

This is not Google's first foray into exploring clean energy alternatives like nuclear energy, as the company has previously expressed interest in such technologies.
