Per The Information
Google's Bard AI program reportedly used data from Microsoft and OpenAI's ChatGPT. This was according to a Google AI researcher who decided to resign after warning Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and other senior executives.
OpenAI's ChatGPT has already raised eyebrows for reportedly using data, images, and other content to train its AI or as sources without proper authorization. Now, it was reported that Google's Bard AI actually used data coming from ChatGPT.
After Microsoft brought ChatGPT to Bing, Google was rushing to compete in the artificial intelligence playing field, and its solution was to release Bard AI. The launch of their AI product, however, didn't go quite as well as its promotion showed it providing inaccurate information.
Upon promotion, Google's Bard AI showed inaccurate information saying that the James Webb Space Telescope was responsible for the first exoplanet pictures. NASA confirmed that the answers shown by Google's AI tool were incorrect.
The space agency clarified that the first exoplanet picture was taken by the Very Large Telescope (VLT) from the European Southern Observatory in 2004. After this, Google's spokesperson said that the company would be combining feedback and testing to improve its AI tool.
The Google AI researcher, Jacob Devin, was worried that Google was violating the terms of service of OpenAI by using their data in Bard AI. If confirmed, this would potentially open a lawsuit against Google.
After resigning, Devin decided to join OpenAI to help work on ChatGPT.
Recently, Bill Gates responded to the open letter and other AI researchers that were calling to pause AI development for models like GPT-4 and more advanced ones for six months. Per the Microsoft co-founder, pausing development wouldn't "solve the challenges."
Gates has been a strong supporter of AI, previously publishing a blog titled "The Age of AI has begun" on March 21.
