Kamala Harris picks Minnesota governor Tim Walz as running mate for November presidential election

Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, promoting the former teacher and Army National Guard veteran to join the Democratic ticket and assist in the campaign against Donald Trump.

Harris personally informed Walz of the decision through a video call, according to a source close to the matter. This choice marks a rapid rise for Walz, who has swiftly moved from relative obscurity to a key figure in the party’s efforts against the former president and the MAGA agenda.

Walz emerged from a highly accelerated vice presidential search process, which considered several Democrats including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly. Harris conducted in-person interviews with Walz, Shapiro, and Kelly on Sunday.

Though Harris and Walz did not have a previous connection, aides noted that Harris became increasingly impressed by Walz's genuine demeanor and developed a positive rapport with him during a final meeting at her residence at the Naval Observatory. Harris was particularly struck by his "authenticity," a person familiar with the process told CNN.

In their first joint appearance at a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Walz portrayed himself as a relatable Midwestern figure and a strong supporter of Harris.

“Thank you for bringing back the joy,” he said to Harris as he took the stage, expressing his excitement to join her and second gentleman Doug Emhoff on this journey.

“We’ve got 91 days. We’ll sleep when we’re dead,” Walz told the audience. “During those 91 days, and every day in the White House, I’ll support Vice President Harris every single day – and we’ll support you.”
