Nearly half of the business meetings aren't needed and won't leave negative impacts

A recent Future Forum survey involving over 10,000 desk workers found that nearly half of the business meetings weren't important. It was noted that the meetings could disappear without negatively affecting the business.

The study found that executives spend 25 hours weekly, on average, on meetings that could disappear without leaving a mark. The top reason they went to meetings was that they thought it was a good use of time.

Another reason why these types of meetings were held was that executives or business leaders thought they would miss something important. For those with lower corporate positions, the main reason why they had to attend meetings was that they were needed.

Shopify has decided to enforce a new rule that would help it save 320,000 hours of meetings yearly. They plan to do this by ending recurring meetings with over two people.

The company also plans to ban holding meetings on Wednesdays. The company will also be limiting big gatherings.

A separate survey found that $100 million was being wasted annually on meetings that weren't important. In 2022, virtual one-on-one meetings were at 42%, up from 17% in 2017, per Vyopta's study, which involved 48,000 meetings.

Recently, it was also found that employees are checking out of work at record rates. This was true for all types of work, whether they be remote, hybrid, or onsite, according to a study by Gallup.

Aside from meetings, a recent study tried to see if the four-day workweek was effective, and out of the 61 companies that did the pilot program, 56 of them decided to continue the program.

The program dropped the normal working hours required from 40 to 32. This would result in four days of eight-hour work.
