NYPD overtime to be cut to help pay for migrant crisis, per NYP.
Jacques Jiha, the budget director under Mayor Eric Adams, has instructed the city's four uniformed agencies, which encompass the police, fire, sanitation, and corrections departments, to develop strategies for reducing their overtime (OT) expenses.
Jiha conveyed this directive in a memo dispatched to city agencies on Saturday, stating, "The mayor will issue a directive to implement an overtime reduction initiative for our city’s four uniformed agencies (NYPD, FDNY, DOC/DSNY). These agencies must formulate a plan to curtail year-over-year OT expenditures."
As part of this initiative, the uniformed agencies are required to provide monthly reports to City Hall, enabling the tracking of overtime expenditures and gauging their progress toward achieving the reduction targets, as outlined in the memo.
This directive coincides with Mayor Adams' concerns regarding the recent influx of tens of thousands of asylum seekers into New York City, which he has warned could have a detrimental financial impact. He has estimated potential costs of up to $12 billion for the city over the next three years. To address this financial challenge, Mayor Adams has called for immediate agency budget reductions of 5%, with the possibility of a total reduction of 15% by spring. However, Jiha noted that even the more substantial reduction would "only cover two-thirds of our projected asylum costs."
