On Monday, the Workers United union announced that thousands of Starbucks employees at hundreds of stores plan to participate in a walkout on the upcoming Red Cup day promotional event this week. The union cited concerns related to staffing and scheduling as the reasons behind the walkout.
Red Cup day, scheduled for Thursday this week, is a significant promotional event during the crucial holiday season, where Starbucks offers free reusable holiday-themed cups with coffee purchases.
In a statement, Workers United emphasized that Red Cup day is notoriously challenging for baristas due to understaffing issues and urged baristas and supervisors across all Starbucks locations to participate in the walkout on November 16.
Last year, the union called for protests at over 100 Starbucks stores during Red Cup day.
In response, Starbucks stated, "We are aware that Workers United has publicized a day of action at a small subset of our U.S. stores next week... Workers United hasn't agreed to meet to progress contract bargaining in more than four months and has yet to deliver on the campaign promises they've made."
Workers United represents over 360 unionized stores and more than 9,000 Starbucks employees, as mentioned on the union's website.
