US military is trialing 5 separate large language models trained with classified military data

Per Bloomberg

The US military is trying out different types of large language models that were trained on classified military data. This comes as Matthew Strohmeyer, a US Air Force colonel, gave a statement about the situation.

Strohmeyer: “It was highly successful. It was very fast... We are learning that this is possible for us to do.”

The colonel noted that LLMs would be representing a massive shift regarding their military. This comes as Strohmeyer said that in the military, there is still little digitalization.

Strohmeyer: “That doesn't mean it's ready for primetime right now. But we just did it live. We did it with secret-level data... Direct US intervention with ground, air and naval forces would probably be necessary... There is little consensus in military circles regarding the outcome of a potential military conflict between the US and China over Taiwan.”

In October 2022, it was noted that China's top military officials vowed to prepare for war as tensions with the US started rising. This came as the top military officials of China said that they would follow President Xi Jinping's directives to strengthen the military to prepare for war.

In February, it was reported that China's Xi has ordered the military to be ready for Taiwan's invasion by 2027.
